Oct. 1 – Natural Strengths of Seasoned Humans
'Re-Passioning Purpose in Your Later Years with Jim and Linda Henry
“One of the obstacles to leading an exciting life in our later years is that we become so sure we are losing something and so unaware of what we are gaining.” – Joan Chittister, The Gift of Years
Whether recognized and actualized or not, there is a growing testimony that humans of all ages have an exceptional component to their lives. Apart from physical limitations, even the eldest among us have talents. This session provides positive, fun resources to explore our gifts and embrace a heightened sense of well-being. Topics include:
- Perspective on the value of aging
- Ageism stereotypes and their antidotes
- Exploring your natural strengths
- Purpose and joy in later years
- Strategies for enjoying “being” when “doing” is limited
Oct. 8 – Getting A Handle on Money
Hear from local experts from banks, financial planning and insurance companies about what you may need to consider as you get ready to make the transition to a different lifestyle. They will be bringing a broad range of information to cover a variety of situations in their industries but will not be selling their specific services. (Also, mark your calendar for Friday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m. when the Social Security Administration will be presenting Social Security 101 and answering questions.)
Oct. 15 – Am I Ready to Make a Move?
Start the morning with Charles Emlet, UWT, as you think through your personal wants and needs whether that includes wanting to move to different housing or stay put. Then hear from Pierce County Aging & Disability Resource Center and the Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman on the many options you may have from in-home services, to shared housing to living in communities. And finally, if you have real estate to consider, Senior Real Estate Specialists will address some of the things to consider and make you aware of services you may not know about that can help make the move easier.
Oct. 22 – Now Grown Up, What Do I Want to Be and Do?
Jim and Linda Nelson will return with more thought-provoking activities on finding your new “work.” Key questions will include identifying what has gotten you this far and how can you build on these strengths. Key topics will include:
- Expanding meaning and purpose for the next 10-20 years
- Saying “no way” to the negative stereotypes of growing older
- Free online career and job search opportunities
- Ways to uncover meaningful work, paid and unpaid.
Oct. 29 – Gifts to Your Family
The most meaningful gifts are rarely financial. Taking care of the legal planning needed is simply a way of making sure your family and friends understand your wishes, whether it has to do with medical, financial or other final decisions. Find out ways of putting your wishes into words and on paper to make it easier on those who care about you. (Also, mark your calendars for the seminar Communicating with Adult Children at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2.)
