President and CEO
Mark Gustafson has dedicated the past 23 years to serving seniors. Among his positions during that time, he has been responsible for the operation of the Wesley Homes DesMoines, WA campus of 500 residents and for 15 years North Ridge retirement community in Minneapolis, Minnesota with 700 residents and a staff of 1,000. Mark holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator in the State of Washington. He has also been active on various boards and industry specific committees. The first 48 years of Mark’s life were spent in Minnesota, and he moved to Washington to take the job at Wesley Homes.
Mark has been married to Sue for 31 years and they have two daughters, Corinne, 29 and Amanda, 27. Sue is an RN and the Director of Infection Prevention for Multicare. Both their girls live in Federal Way.
In his spare time, he really enjoys playing golf, roasting coffee, working in the yard and doing home improvement projects.
Vice President Finance and Support Services
With more than 20 years of accounting and not-for-profit management experience, Judy is a great asset to Franke Tobey Jones. In addition to Accounting and Administration, Judy manages the Information Technology and Support Services functions. She has excellent management skills and has been invaluable in making sure Franke Tobey Jones remains a fiscally responsible organization. Graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Judy earned her Bachelors Degree in Accounting. Her professional affiliation is with Healthcare Financial Management Association. Her past and present community and civic activities include the YWCA Pierce County, The Fund for Women and Girls, Annie Wright School, and the Tacoma Farmers Market.
Senior Director of Residential Accommodations
Michelle has been with Franke Tobey Jones since 1999, and continues to enjoy building relationships with the residents and their families. Michelle began her career while attending college in 1984, and she remained in retail management until 1996. After working with Windemere Real Estate as a Listing Coordinator, she embarked on her journey with Franke Tobey Jones. One of Michelle’s highlights during her time at FTJ has been her integral involvement in the planning and completion of a $13 million building project to incorporate a brand new independent apartment complex and Wellness Center on campus.
Michelle enjoys helping residents and their families work through the feelings that go along with a lifestyle change and deal with the challenges that many seniors face in their own homes. The high standards, excellent reputation and beautiful campus that Franke Tobey Jones offers makes it easy for her to love her job, and the people that live and work at Franke Tobey Jones.
Christine Hall, MIRM, CSP, CMD, ATM
Senior Director of Marketing and Public Relations
Christine Hall has been a marketing and public relations specialist for the past 30 years. Before joining Franke Tobey Jones in 2009 Christine was the Vice President of Marketing for Jenamar Communities where she developed the brand and marketing program for Jubilee, an active adult community in Lacey, WA. Her other marketing experience includes nearly ten years with Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company as the Director of Marketing at Northwest Landing in DuPont, WA and eleven years marketing regional shopping centers in four states.
Chris has a BA Degree from the University of Washington (Seattle) with a major in Communications. She has earned both a MIRM designation (Member – Institute of Residential Marketing) and CSP (Certified New Home Sales Professional) through the National Association of Home Builders, a CMD designation (Certified Marketing Director) through the International Council of Shopping Centers and an ATM designation (Advanced Toastmaster) through Toastmasters International. She belonged to Toastmasters for eight years and served in many leadership roles including Toastmaster District Governor in Western Washington.
Aside from Chris’ passion for marketing, her other passion is choral singing. She has sung here and abroad for the last 40 years with many outstanding groups. Chris is a charter member of the Northwest Repertory Singers in Tacoma and has sung with them for the past 13 years.
Senior Director of Development
Sarah has 16 years of fund development experience, previously as Pierce County Campaign Manager for ArtsFund, Director of Development Information at the University of Puget Sound, Director of Annual Fund for The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Regional Campaign Manager for the University of Minnesota’s Capital Campaign. She also previously held the position of Vice President of Trust Administration at Key Private Bank. Sarah holds a B.A. degree in English Literature from Macalester College in St. Paul and a M.A. degree in English Literature from the University of Minnesota. She has served with the following organizations: the Tacoma Arts Commission (Chair and Vice-Chair), the boards of the Tacoma Youth Chorus and Tacoma Actors Guild, the ArtsFund’s Pierce County Cabinet and on the board of UMO. Sarah has lived in Tacoma for approximately 20 years.
Senior Director of Dining Services
Jim has over 26 years experience in food services, with over 21 of that in management. He has been affiliated with Franke Tobey Jones since 1989. He graduated from culinary arts school in 1977 and has a kitchen design background for Health Care facilities. Jim previously served eight years with the Air Force in food services.
Health Services Manager
Benedette Evans, a Registered Nurse, joined the FTJ team in 2013 as the Health Services Manager, overseeing the Health Care Center. She has served in the health care industry for 6 years with an emphasis in geriatric care. As well as being a Nurse, Charge Nurse and Assistant Director of Nursing before joining FTJ, she was the Quality and Education Director at a Healthcare Center in El Paso, TX.
Benedette has experience in providing systematic review of processes including fall prevention programs, standards of care, infection control, tracking and trending, and new admissions process and outcomes. She is wonderful at collaborating with doctors, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists and nutritionists to ensure proper care and discharge planning for residents. Furthermore, she is excellent at providing direct quality and loving care to residents while maintaining high-level standards. Benedette says “Ever since I was eleven I started out taking care of my grandmother who had dementia and that is what drew me to geriatrics.”
Personally, Benedette is married to a soldier serving in the Army and is a mom of a beautiful 3 year old girl.
Kristie Dowdy, SPHR
Human Resources Director
Kristie Dowdy joined the FTJ team April 8th as the new Human Resources Director. Having spent the last 20 years in positions of senior human resources partner and leader, Dowdy most recently held the position as Senior Human Resources Manager for Comprehensive Clinical Development NW, a clinical research organization, providing strategic and hands-on HR, training and safety guidance serving 350 employees. Her career has taken her from Bremerton, to Tampa and back to Tacoma, “the place I call home,” she says.
Born in Denver, Colorado, Dowdy attended the University of Northern Colorado majoring in Elementary Education and Psychology. Most recently she attained her BS in Psychology from the University of Phoenix. She earned her SPHR, Senior Professional in Human Resources, from the University of South Florida and her Training Specialist Certification from the University of Washington.
Kristie has two sons. Ted and his wife, Tori, live in Port Orchard, and Ben lives in Tacoma. A very NW family, they enjoy hiking and camping – even in the rain. Kristie also enjoys gardening, reading and spending time with family and friends.
Myrna Andrus, CFM
Director of Building Services
Myrna been affiliated with Franke Tobey Jones since 2010, and has over twenty-five years of progressive management and facilities experience within private, not-for-profit organizations, as well as government and municipal agencies in the fields of real property and facility management and operations.
Myrna holds professional certification as a Certified Facility Manager (CFM) through the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) and through the University of Washington.
She has a passion for enhancing employee involvement and for community empowerment. It is easy to love the job because of the people that live and work at Franke Tobey Jones, the quality standards, the beautiful campus and excellent reputation that Franke Tobey Jones had earned through the years.
Director of Life Enrichment
Megumi Azekawa joined Franke Tobey Jones as the new Director of Life Enrichment in October 2013 with over 10 years of experience working with people age 55 or better in providing music, arts, and other enrichment activities in Japan, Vancouver, Washington, and Colorado.
Megumi learned the importance of meaningful daily activities as an essential part in seniors through her experience being as a CNA, which led her to become a music therapist. She holds a master’s degree in music therapy from Colorado State University and has served a wide variety of populations through her music therapy work. She has collaborated with not-for-profit organizations to design both a community outreach singing program for 55 or better and a singing group for individuals with Parkinson’s disease to exercise their vocal and speech abilities. Megumi is also an accomplished saxophonist and completed her Bachelor of Music in Saxophone Performance at the University of Washington.
She lives in Tacoma with her husband (Brett), daughter (Marina), and dog (Rocky). In her spare time, Megumi enjoys hiking, traveling and exploring, reading, movies, crafts, colored pencil drawing and home improvement.
