When it comes to aging, it’s common to dwell on future limitations. But with the right community, growing older can also be defined by adventure, curiosity and purpose.

For more than a century, Franke Tobey Jones has quietly redefined what it means to age well, says Franke Tobey Jones President and CEO Judy Dunn. “Named for its founder, Franke Tobey Jones was created with a bold idea for its time: that older adults deserve not only care and comfort, but also dignity, independence and opportunities to thrive.”

Over the decades, that guiding principle has evolved into a vibrant, forward-thinking community set on a beautiful 20-acre campus overlooking Commencement Bay, Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountains. Guided by a holistic, person-centered approach, the community nurtures wellness, fosters meaningful connections and encourages a fulfilling life at every stage.

Its commitment to excellence has earned Franke Tobey Jones recognition in 2024, 2025 and 2026 as #3 in Washington state on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Continuing Care Retirement Communities.

Serving residents and the community

Operating as a not-for-profit, Franke Tobey Jones reinvests every dollar into programs, buildings and services that benefit the people who call it home and the neighbors who enjoy the campus and attend programs there, explains Dunn. “This community-first philosophy has earned it a reputation that extends beyond its campus borders.”

Senior University

One example of community outreach is Senior University, a continuing education program open to residents and community members. It offers engaging classes on art, history, science, technology, travel, current events and more led by expert instructors and local professionals. According to Jana Wennstrom, Franke Tobey Jones’ Senior University coordinator, this program reflects Franke Tobey Jones’ belief that learning has no age limit, and that intellectual curiosity is key to a fulfilling life. “Learning is a lifelong journey that keeps us growing and connected,” Wennstrom adds.

Wellness and holistic programs

The wellness and holistic programs, also open to adults 55+, focus on whole-person well-being. From fitness and yoga to mindfulness workshops and nutrition classes, the programs blend physical, emotional and social wellness. As Sarah Doerner, Franke Tobey Jones’ holistic wellness coordinator explains, activities like balance and strength training, gong meditation, forest bathing, cultural cuisine and social events show that wellness is about more than staying active — it’s about living fully.

Continuum of care

Franke Tobey Jones’ continuum of care includes independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing to support residents through life’s changes, while still preserving independence and individuality. This holistic approach has built a reputation for quality and warmth, says Terry Allman, a residential accommodations team member at Franke Tobey Jones (whose mother has been a resident for 12 years). “Families trust the community for its thoughtful amenities and the professionalism, kindness and respect that define its culture and care.”

New apartments at Parkside View

“As our community celebrates over 100 years of service, our mission remains as vital as ever,” says Dunn: “To enrich and extend the quality of life for seniors in our community, which is done by creating a welcoming environment where seniors can learn, grow and connect. Rooted in history yet inspired by the future, Franke Tobey Jones shows what’s possible when a community cares deeply, not just for its residents, but for all who call the Puget Sound region home.”
