Western American Landscape Art, Manifest Destiny & Present-Day Controversy3pm
Bristol View 1st Floor Bowditch Room
This talk features such landscapes as Bierstadt’s Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast, 1870 (Seattle Art Museum), and gives special attention to the controversies surrounding interpretations of these landscapes. The last generation saw a wave of revisionist scholarship about Western American landscape painting that rejected the celebratory interpretations pervasive earlier. This led to a full-out culture war with ramifications for today’s political climate in which anything countering triumphalist ideology is threatened with defunding or cancellation. In 1991, it was the Smithsonian Institution’s exhibition “The West as America” that sparked this culture war. And now in 2025, the White House has called out the Smithsonian for its “divisive, race-central ideology” and its “promotion of narratives that portray American values as inherently harmful and oppressive.” The talk will consider old and new ways of understanding 19th-century Western American landscapes and place them within their own (and our own) cultural and socio-political contexts. The talk will also show how the Seattle Art Museum has responded to the new thinking.

Revolutionary Points of View: A Living History Performance by Karen Haas2pm
MJ Wicks Wellness Center
Join Karen Haas to learn about the American Revolution from the point of view of 2 tavern keepers' wives. The American Colonists in 1776 were deeply divided: many were in favor of rebellion, many wanted to stay part of England and many just wanted to be left alone. Karen brings this pivotal era for our nation to life as she portrays Patriot Susannah Foote of Boston and Loyalist Eliza Fowler of New York. Their contrasting points of view shine a light on the past that can help us see our modern times more clearly. This program made possible by a generous donation by Claire & Dick Griffin.

The Value of Sleep10am
Bristol View 1st Floor Bowditch Room
Should you take a pill that gives you all the health benefits of sleep and allows you to stay awake? I argue that you shouldn’t. I propose three reasons why sleeping, conceived of as a socially and culturally embedded human activity, is valuable. First, there is aesthetic value in the rituals that typically precede and follow sleeping; second, there is interpersonal value in the intimacy that stems from sleeping with other people; third, there is ethical value in mere presence and in retreating from consciousness. In order to fully support my argument, I situate it within a conception of goodness that embraces the fragility of the human condition and the limitations stemming from our corporeal nature.

Literary League Book Club: The Mighty Red2pm
Bristol View 1st Floor Bowditch Room
Join us as we discuss The Mighty Red by Loise Erdrich About the book: In this stunning novel, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich tells a story of love, natural forces and the tragic impact of big business. Gorgeous and heartrending, The Mighty Red is a triumph from one of our most celebrated writers. In the Red River Valley of North Dakota, several lives revolve around a wedding fraught with desire, jealousy, and uncertainty. Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, an impulsive, lapsed goth who can't read her own future but will settle for fulfilling his. Her best friend, Hugo, a gentle, red-haired, homeschooled giant, also loves Kismet and is determined to steal her away and build a life together. Kismet's mother, Crystal, drives a truck for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes in to the darkness of late-night radio, experiences visions of guardian angels, and worries about what's to come, for her daughter and herself. The Mighty Red is Louise Erdrich at her consummate best. A novel of tender humor, disquietude, yearning, community, and family, it is about ordinary people who dream, grow up, fall in love, struggle, endure tragedy, carry bitter secrets; men and women both complicated and contradictory, flawed and decent, lonely and hopeful. Human time, deep time, Red River time, and geological time are explored alongside the impact of crises in our own time -- climate change, the depletion of natural resources, the economic meltdown of 2008. As will every book this great modern master writes, The Mighty Red is about our tattered bond with the earth, and about love in all its absurdity and splendor.
