Discover the Joy of Drumming: Rhythm, Connection and Community
At Franke Tobey Jones Senior University
Few things bring people together quite like the beat of a drum. Across cultures and centuries, drumming has been a way to communicate, celebrate, heal and connect. From the deep tones of African djembes and the resonant hum of frame drums to the lively pulse of Latin percussion, drums have always played a vital role in human expression and community life.
Now you can experience that same sense of rhythm and connection right here at Franke Tobey Jones!
Discover Drums! Learning Percussion and Drum Circle
Fridays, November 7, 14, & 21 — 10:00 am
Bristol View, 1st Floor Bowditch Room
Join us for a hands-on introduction to percussion led by the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association. No prior experience is needed — just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm! All instruments and materials are provided.
You’ll learn the basics of rhythm and percussion while exploring a variety of instruments such as djembes, frame drums, and talking drums. Each week, you’ll grow your skills and confidence as we make music together in a collaborative drum circle — an uplifting experience where every beat contributes to the shared rhythm.
Drumming is more than just fun; it’s energizing, stress-relieving, and deeply social. Studies show that group drumming promotes relaxation, improves coordination, and fosters a sense of belonging. Whether you’re tapping along for the first time or rediscovering your love for music, this class promises laughter, learning, and a joyful connection through rhythm.
You must register with Jana Wennstrom at jwennstrom@franketobeyjones.com or at 253-756-6219.
Come feel the power of the beat — and the joy of being part of something bigger than yourself.
