Painters and Patrons: The Little-Known Art of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church

After a brief introduction to Ethiopia, the class will learn about the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, one of the world’s oldest Christian churches. This will especially focus on why Ethiopian Orthodox Churches are often painted from floor to ceiling, and the three kinds of paintings found in churches: manuscript illuminations, icons, and mural paintings. And because these traditional forms of art are alive and well in Ethiopia, the class will be introduced to some of the painters who produce them and the patrons who commission these works and why they give them to churches.

When Death Is Welcome: Hastening Dying Ethically, Legally, and with Palliative Support

The class will begin with a brief but comprehensive review of legally permissible ways for a patient to hasten death, including their major respective advantages and disadvantages to patient and family. Ethical arguments – some readily accepted, some highly controversial – will then be explored, particularly those about several of the less well-known or understood options. Special attention will be given to options for hastening death for those who wish to avoid living into the final stages of progressive dementia (including Alzheimer’s).
