1930 – Many Support Home During the Depression

Unemployed men queued outside a Depression Era soup kitchen opened by Al Capone in Chicago, February, 1931. Annual meeting report year ending April 1933

“There is one place in the world where the word depression has been heard but not felt, and that place is within the walls of the Franke Tobey Jones Home, and it is my pleasure to report that by far the larger number of our beneficiaries of the Home are cognizant of the presence of its sheltering arms.  And duly appreciate the added responsibility of the Board of Trustees are carrying for them, that they may continue to enjoy the care and comfort the Home provides.  Many members have personally expressed to me their gratefulness to all those who are so bravely, during this trying business period, working to support this Home.  However, we have dispensed with all luxuries and any unnecessary expenses such as the children’s annual party which the members usually pay for themselves.  Everyone agreeing that this was the right thing to do under present circumstances.”
