FTJ and UPS Build A Wellness Partnership

When Liz Corwin, a professor in the Physical Therapy department at the University of Puget Sound, reached out to Franke Tobey Jones through the Holistic Wellness Program, a new collaboration was immediately welcomed. Professor Corwin teaches a geriatrics course and was looking for ways to connect her students with hands-on learning opportunities at a local senior center or retirement community.  Sarah Doerner, Holistic Wellness Coordinator realized it would be a wonderful benefit for FTJ residents and was overjoyed to take part in this student/patient partnership.

After meeting with Liz and Danny McMillian, another outstanding clinical professor, a program was put into action. On March 6, from 1:00 – 5:00 PM, doctoral students from the University of Puget Sound’s School of Physical Therapy came to Franke Toby Jones to offer STEADI Screenings to FTJ residents, a fall-risk assessment developed by the Center for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC). The students guided participants through questionnaires, physical assessments, and personalized recommendations to help reduce their fall risk.  “It was a great exchange for all of us,” commented FTJ resident Lynn Brown.  “The students were very personable and spent a lot of time interviewing us, giving personal assessments, and putting forth suggestions.  There was positive feedback and ways to address strengths and weaknesses, including suggesting different classes that are offered at the FTJ Wellness Center.  It was a very enjoyable and informative afternoon!”

Professor Corwin added, “The students found the experience incredibly rewarding and it’s been extremely beneficial for them.  They get to put into practice what they have been learning in the classroom.

As their professor, it is very exciting from my perspective to see how good they are at critical thinking and putting all the pieces together and interacting really well with the participants.

On April 3, from 3:00-5:00 PM, Wellness will be hosting Balance Boost, a follow-up session at the Wellness Center. This additional hands-on event, led by PT doctoral students, will focus on fun and engaging activities designed to improve strength, coordination, and overall balance. “Their reflections were inspiring and showed just how valuable these connections can be—not just for the seniors, but for the students as well,” said Sarah.  “With such great feedback, we’re excited to keep this partnership going. This class will return in March 2026, and I can’t wait to see even more positive impact”
