Future Physical Therapists Inspired by FTJ Residents at Annual STEADI Balance Screenings

UPS physical therapy students host popular balance screenings at FTJ
On Tuesday, March 3, the University of Puget Sound Doctor of Physical Therapy students returned to Franke Tobey Jones for the annual STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries) balance screenings—an event that continues to grow in popularity each year.
Held in the FTJ Wellness Center from 1–4 p.m., the free screenings offered older adults an opportunity to assess their balance and learn strategies to reduce fall risk. Participants completed a brief questionnaire, followed by a physical balance assessment and personalized recommendations from the students.
Interest in the program was stronger than ever this year, with every appointment slot filled. Residents and community members alike took part in the screenings, making it another successful year for this valuable partnership with the University of Puget Sound’s Physical Therapy Department and faculty members Liz Corwin and Holly Roberts.
While the students came to practice their clinical skills, they left equally impressed by the vitality and strength of the FTJ participants. Residents confidently demonstrated their balance and mobility, often leaving the students wide-eyed and amazed. More than a few jaw-dropping moments reminded everyone that active living truly makes a difference.
Events like these highlight the spirit of collaboration between Franke Tobey Jones and the University of Puget Sound—supporting the education of future healthcare professionals while empowering older adults to stay strong, active, and independent.
We look forward to continuing this meaningful partnership for many years to come.
