Protect, Plant, and Prosper

June is when gardens in the Pacific Northwest truly come alive—but it’s also when they need a little extra care and attention. From managing invasive plants to planning a productive summer harvest, this is the season to protect what you’ve planted and set the stage for months of enjoyment ahead.

At the Point Defiance–Ruston Senior Center, the Gardening Series continues with timely, practical classes designed to help you tackle common challenges and grow with confidence—no matter your experience level.

🌿 June 25

“Noxious Neighbors: English Ivy”
Presented by Joey Pepin

It may look lush and harmless, but English ivy can quickly take over—crowding out native plants and damaging trees and structures. In this informative session, you’ll learn how to identify invasive ivy, understand its impact, and discover effective ways to remove and manage it. If you’ve ever wondered how to reclaim your garden space, this class is a must.

Gardening with Purpose

June is the perfect reminder that gardening isn’t just about planting—it’s about stewardship. Tending a garden encourages us to stay active, think creatively, and remain engaged with the world around us.

For older adults, it also offers meaningful benefits:

  • Keeps the body moving with gentle, purposeful activity
  • Reduces stress while promoting a sense of calm and focus
  • Encourages lifelong learning and problem-solving
  • Creates opportunities for connection and shared experiences
  • Builds a lasting sense of pride as your garden thrives

And here in the Pacific Northwest, every garden—big or small—becomes part of a larger, vibrant ecosystem.
