The Heart of Franke Tobey Jones’ Mission: The Pt. Defiance-Ruston Senior Center

For nearly 30 years, the Pt. Defiance-Ruston Senior Center has been a cornerstone of Franke Tobey Jones’ commitment to helping older adults live longer, healthier, and more connected lives. Operated and funded by Franke Tobey Jones, the Senior Center is not simply a community gathering place. It is a vital expression of our nonprofit mission to support seniors, especially those with limited financial resources, by fostering independence, reducing isolation, and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement.

Every day, the Senior Center welcomes older adults from across Tacoma to participate in programs that nourish the mind, body, and spirit. What begins as a shared meal, exercise class, or educational program often becomes something even more important: friendship, belonging, and community.

Remarkable Range of Services and Activities

The Senior Center offers a remarkable range of services and activities at little or no cost, including nutritious lunches, health screenings, exercise and wellness programs, diabetes and blood pressure testing, food and clothing assistance, transportation resources, educational workshops, tax preparation, creative arts, theater, writing groups, cultural learning opportunities, travel programs, and social activities. New offerings such as the Senior Theater Group, Bunco Club, and Chinese Culture & Language classes provide opportunities for lifelong learning, creativity, and connection.

Volunteers and Partners

Behind every class, meal, and activity is a community of caring volunteers and partners. In 2025 alone, volunteers contributed more than 6,100 hours of service, helping ensure that seniors have a welcoming place to gather, learn, and thrive.

Community Support

As the need for senior services continues to grow, so does the importance of community support. The Pt. Defiance-Ruston Senior Center relies on philanthropy, partnerships, and volunteers to sustain and expand programs that keep older adults healthy, engaged, and independent.
