The Importance of Support in the Dementia Care Journey

Dementia Support Group at Franke Tobey Jones
Caring for a loved one with dementia is a journey filled with both love and challenge. While it can be deeply meaningful, it can also feel overwhelming, isolating and exhausting at times. That’s why having strong support systems is so vital, not only for the person living with dementia, but also for the family members and friends who walk alongside them. At Franke Tobey Jones, we understand that no one should have to face this journey alone.
Support comes in many forms. Sometimes it’s the encouragement to keep moving through exercise classes in our Senior Wellness and Fitness Program, which helps residents maintain strength, mobility, and independence. Other times, it’s the gentle reassurance of our Holistic Wellness Program, which recognizes that true wellbeing is more than just physical, it also encompasses emotional resilience, spiritual grounding, social connection and a sense of purpose. These programs are designed to nurture the whole person, creating an environment where both residents and caregivers feel supported.
For care partners, having a safe space to share experiences, frustrations and triumphs can make all the difference. That’s why we offer a Support Group for People Whose Partners Have Dementia, meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. This group is led by FTJ resident Kay Coulter, a seasoned community mental health nurse who brings compassion, understanding, and practical insight to every session. Whether it’s learning coping strategies, exchanging resources or simply knowing you’re not alone, the support group provides a place of belonging and strength.
Because the group is kept small, limited to 12 people, you’ll have the opportunity to connect meaningfully with others who truly understand what you’re going through. To reserve your spot, please RSVP with Sarah Doerner, Holistic Wellness Coordinator, at 253-756-6387 or sdoerner@franketobeyjones.com. ( To participate you need to belong to the FTJ Wellness Program).
At FTJ, we are committed to walking alongside residents and families every step of the way. If you have questions or need additional resources, please don’t hesitate to call us at 253-752-6621. Together, we can ensure that this journey is filled with compassion, connection, and hope.
